Opal which is best known as the queen of gems plays well with colors. Because of its distinct color formation properties women love to have jewelry made from this gemstone.But as we all know opals are porous in nature due to which it has maximum chances to absorb moisture and other fluids from its surroundings, this will increase the chances for the color to fade away and in due course of time even disappear.If such thing happens then the jewelry will become useless. Therefore one needs to pay a bit of extra attention towards opal jewelry than any other gemstone.

Protect it from extreme temperature


Rapid changes in the temperature can damage your opal jewelry. So you need to take care of your gemstone when you are moving from cold to hot temperature or vice a versa in a short intervals.In such conditions you should take off your opals and store them in a place where temperature variation is unknown.

Store them separately


You need to be aware that your opal stone will not get starched, so make sure you keep them away from the rest of your jewelry. You can simply place them in a soft bag and if you are storing them for a long time period then wrap them in cotton wool, add some drops of water and then store them in a plastic bag. Doing this you will minimize the effects of damaging your gemstone.


Clean them carefully


As Opal are of different types and so have different properties. Their care should be done according to their properties;if your opal is a duplet or a triplet they are usually attached by glue,in that case wash them only when it is necessary. For other opal types clean them with very small amount of luke warm water with the help of soft brush and dry gently with the help of absorbable cloth. Always remember to carry out all the processes softly and gently so thatyour gemstone are not scratched. In case you rub your opals hard or do it carelessly you are going to harm them.
  


After using for years your stone may lose its shine and look dull in such case you need to take help from a professional polisher. He /she can help your gem to shine again.

Avoid any kind of solution 

Opal is porous in nature, when you put any kind of solution on it, the stone will absorbed it all. And the reaction can be any either the opal color property will disappear or your stone may get completely damaged.So any kind of solution is harmful for opal stones.

 Never jam your jewelry box with jewelries. It may cause damage or your jewelry can be misplaced as you didn’t store them safely. Your jewelry or gemstone is very precious and they requires appropriate storage.
·         Take off your jewelry when you are going to take a bath, cleaning your house or dishes. Soap and detergent can leave a fine film of chemical which can affect the beauty of your jewelry
·         Never boil your jewelry to clean it.Your jewelry and precious stones will crack because of the high temperature.
·         Make sure you are not storing your jewelry for a long time period. Try to check it after some time period because some stones like opal or emeralds have a bad impact due to dryness.
·         Make a routine to check your fine jewelry pieces every 1-2 years and take help from reliable jeweler if the settings are ok or not because all jewelry requires maintenance.
